12 Great Games to Take Along

Posted by Linda Schmidt on

Summer's here, and whether you're headed out on a long road trip or off for a quick jaunt to a neighboring state, it's always a good idea to take along a game or two.  All of these are eminently packable and offer a lot of bang for your buck!

Pocket Card Games from Helvetiq:  Forest, Hippo, and Bandido

These games from Swiss publisher Helvetiq are stylish, fun, and none of them require reading, so even the youngest travelers can join in the fun.  We especially love Bandido, which is cooperative and perfect for those times when you just want everyone to GET ALONG, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!

Dice Games:  Pizza Party, Qwixx, Castles of Burgundy Dice Game

Dice games are an absolute necessity for us when we travel during the summer!  There aren't a ton of cards to blow away if we're playing out on a picnic table, and we tend to be a lot less concerned about pieces getting lost or damaged.  Here we have a super cute children's game, a family-friendly roll-and-write, and a dice version of the popular Castles of Burgundy board game.  Something for everyone!

Port-A-Party Games from Gamewright: PDQ and Think 'N Sync

There are now 10 different titles in this series, and we think most of them are really terrific little games.  PDQ and Think 'N Sync are two of the newer ones, but any of the games in the series would be a fine choice to bring along on a trip.

Small Box Games from Oink Games: Deep Sea Adventures and A Fake Artist Goes to New York

These little gems from Japanese company Oink Games are really beautifully designed and quite fun to play.  Your traveling companions are sure to be charmed and amused by them!

Small Card Games: Cahoots and Monopoly Deal

Cahoots is a new cooperative card game from Gamewright, and in our opinion it's one of the best new family games of the year.  Think Uno crossed with a less stressful version of Hanabi, and you'll get the idea.  We also continue to love Monopoly Deal, and if you've never played it before, you really should give it a try!
