Summer Travel Season is Here
When you hit the road, don't leave the fun & games behind!

At last!  Summer is here and it's time to pack the bags and get the heck out of town.  Not that we don't love Chicago, but we have several fun trips planned this summer and we can't wait!   So, since all of the travel arrangements have been made, the only thing left to think about is what to pack.  Clothes take us about 10 minutes to deal with, so that's a no-brainer.  The selection of games that make it into our luggage, however, requires more thought, and boy is that a lot more fun to contemplate than clothes!   Without further ado, here are some of the things that we'll definitely be taking along with us this year on our summer travels.

Travel cribbage - Cribbage is our classic game of choice now, ever since Andre and I learned how to play a few months ago.  I admit that I'm addicted, so there's no way I'm going on a trip without my travel set!  We'll also take along a compact book of card games, in case we feel like learning something new.  If cribbage isn't your game, don't worry.  We have travel versions of other classic games like backgammon and chess, plus travel editions of old favorites like Scrabble, Rummikub, and Sequence.

A few strategy, card, & dice games - There are a lot of good small games that travel well, but when deciding what to bring on a trip, I try to think about how the games will complement each other.  I want some games that are light, some that are more strategic, some just for adults or 2 players, and some for groups.  All that, and the total collection should fit in a small shoebox!  Here's what I'm thinking will make it into the suitcases this year:

  • Roll Through the Ages - Andre and I love this game for the beach!  There are no cards to blow away or loose small bits to get lost - just roll the dice in the box lid.

  • Pocket Rockets & Mow - Both are from Asmodee's Kangaroo line; very small and fun for all of us to play together!

  • Many of the small box games from Fantasy Flight are really good strategy games, and so we always take along one or two of them.  This year it will be Condottiere and CIA vs. KGB, but we also really recommend Citadels and Colossal Arena.

  • Dice games are perfect for tossing into a purse or backpack, so we'll bring Zombie Dice of course, but I think we'll also try Cosmic Wimpout.  Other recommendations are  Pass the Pigs, Pocket Farkle, and Swipe.

Yes & Know Magic Pen Books - These are our absolute favorite activity books for kids, and we have a big selection of them available in the store this summer.  Our guys have already picked out Mr. Mystery and Ripley's Believe it or Not books for their summer travels, but we also have sports trivia, Yes & Know variety books, magic pen painting books, and more.  Magic pen books are great for ages 3 and up, and we can tell you from personal experience that no kid should venture out on a long trip without one!

WASGIJ? jigsaw puzzle from Ravensburger - We'll be enjoying a summer house near lake Michigan for a week, and a good jigsaw puzzle for the screened-in porch is a must.   I've been dying to try one of the tricky WASGIJ puzzles and our kids really like the cartoon style, so I'm sure this will be a hit!

We'd love to hear what recommendations you have for great travel games!
