Holiday Shopping

On December 6 we'll be participating in the Northern Lights event sponsored by the Wicker Park/Bucktown Chamber of Commerce.  From 11 am - 6 pm Bucktown stores north of Armitage will be decked out for the holidays and offering light refreshments, making for a festive day of shopping.  There are dozens of wonderful, unique shops in the area, so it will be a great day to visit us and some of our neighbors as well.

If you need help finding the perfect game for your kids, family or friends, check out our 2008 Gift Guide.  It's full of great gift ideas for young and old alike!  Of course, if you really just can't decide what to get, you can always give a Cat & Mouse gift certificate.  It makes an outstanding stocking stuffer!

What's New in the Store - Mahjong, Backgammon and More!

We received two big shipments today of the tried and true:  some are classics and some are titles that you might remember from your childhood.

First the classics.  We are now stocking Mahjong, and have a few different styles available.  We have the larger attaché style with full-size tiles and a smaller (but not that small!) travel set that has thinner tiles.  We also received a few more chess boards, plus a nice variety of backgammon sets ranging in size from 15″ to 19″.   More dominoes also arrived, and we’re happy that we can now offer Mexican Train sets as well as thick Double 6’s that come in an attractive box, perfect for gift-giving.

And if you’re in the mood for a flashback, how about Mastermind, Blockhead, Jeopardy, Rummikub, or Wheel of Fortune?   All oldies but goodies that never go out of style!

What's Coming Next Week

Holy Cow!  The number of great games being released this month is amazing!  Arriving on Tuesday will be two long-awaited titles from Valley Games:  Titan and Municipium.  We'll also be receiving some new Z-Man titles:  Wasabi! (see BGG Con Buzz below) and Genji.   And we wouldn't want Rio Grande to feel left out, so we'll also be getting in Lost Cities: The Board Game, Sylla, Leader 1, and the newest addition to the Carcassonne line - Carcasonne: Catapult.

Board Games With Scott Features Say Anything

There are a lot of great web sites about board games, but one of our favorites is BoardGamesWithScott.com.  He has produced an amazing number of videos that teach viewers how to play various games, from party games like Say Anything to strategy games like Agricola and Puerto Rico.  If you're like me and hate to read rules, his videos are a great resource, so check him out.

BoardGameGeek (BGG) Convention Buzz

Our friend and roving reporter Beth called from BGG Con in Dallas today and let us know that Ghost Stories from Asmodee is shaping up as one of the most popular games of the convention.  This is yet another cooperative game, and Beth gave it a very enthusiastic thumbs up!  You can read more about Ghost Stories on Boardgamenews.com.

Also getting a lot of buzz is Wasabi! from Z-Man Games.  Wasabi! is a light and fast game where you compete against other players to assemble your quota of unique sushi recipes in a rapidly dwindling space.  The game has nice colorful artwork and is quick to learn, so it should appeal to a lot of people.

Upcoming Events - Brass, Ghost Stories, Through the Ages, and Battlestar game demos

We're going to have lots of events through the end of the year, but plans for all of them aren't quite firmed up yet.  Here's a preview:  On Tuesday, December 2, Keith Blume from FRED Distribution will be joining us to lead a game of either Brass or Through the Ages.  We'll probably ask for RSVP's for this event.  On some Saturday evening yet to be determined we'll also be hosting an evening of Ghost Stories, and will run another game of Battlestar during one of our regular Tuesday night game nights.  Make sure you check our event calendar for updates!

Looking for HELP (i.e. a seasonal worker)

Since my home DNA lab isn't quite up to the task of cloning Andre, we need to hire 1 or 2 people to work on Saturday or Sunday afternoons through Christmas.   The ideal employee will know a bit about a variety of styles of games, and will be able to talk to customers enthusiastically about them.  If you are interested, give us a call at 773-384-4454.

Here's hoping that all of you have a spectacular Thanksgiving!
