What's Happening in the Store

Agricola Update
Agricola is back in stock.  Once we run through this batch (it came in yesterday and we're already down to 9 available copies) it probably won't be back in stock until late November.  For those of you who want to jazz up your Agricola game a bit, we should have the Animeeples from Mayday Games in the store within a few weeks, and we recommend pre-ordering.

Fun New Stuff
Here are some new products that you'll find in the store, proving once again that we have entertainment for the whole family covered:

  • New strategy games  - Dutch Golden Age, Chinatown, Tomb, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and Battlestations Revised are now in stock.
  • New lines for little ones - We've gotten a lot of requests for more games for 2-4 year olds, and so we've expanded our selection of Haba and Ravensburger titles.  We've also added a variety of wooden games and puzzles from Plan Toys and Imagiplay, which are two very environmentally and socially responsible companies that make their products from plantation-grown rubberwood.
  • War games from Multiman - We've received a small selection of games from MultiMan including ASL starter kits and South Mountain.  If you're interested in wargaming, let us know and we'll make sure we keep a good selection of GMT and Multiman titles in stock.

Events

  • Game Night - Every Tuesday night is game night at Cat & Mouse.  Pick a game from our demo library, or bring a game of your own.  Gaming starts at 6:30 pm and goes until about 9:30 or 10 pm.
  • Family Game Day - This Saturday the 18th we're hosting Family Game Day, which happens on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of every month.  Parents can come drop in with their children (ages 3 and up) any time between 1 and 4 pm.  We'll recommend games from our demo collection based on your interests and the ages of your kids, and help you discover great games that the whole family can enjoy together.
  • Fun & Casual Game Day - On Tuesday nights people generally play strategy games, so this Sunday afternoon we'll try a change of pace and bring out some lighter fare for our Fun & Casual Game Day.  If you're looking for some new games that are quick to learn, fun to play, and appeal to a variety of players, join us this Sunday between 1 and 4 pm.
  • Heroscape - Heroscape is an expandable miniature adventure game that pits heroes against bad guys, and we'll be battling it out on Saturday, Oct. 25 from 2 to 4 pm.    We know lots of boys (both the 8-year-old variety and the adult-but-young-at-heart variety) who absolutely love this game.  If you know someone who has a passion for heroes or mythology they'll probably love it too, so send them over and we'll show them the ropes.
  • Battlestar Galactica Release Party - This event was originally scheduled for Saturday October 25th, but the release has been delayed and so we're re-scheduling the party for Saturday November 15.  Word on the street is that even people who don't watch the show are loving the game, and it's sure to be a hot item for the holidays.  You can pre-order a copy through us by calling 773-384-4454 or emailing info@cat-n-mouse.com

A complete calendar of events can be found on our web site.

It's the economy, stupid, so go play some games!

Well, that's not exactly what James Carville said so long ago, but if he did, it would have made sense.  Why?  Well for one thing, board games provide great entertainment value.  For example, we have a copy of Robo Rally that we've played at least a dozen times with another couple.  We spent about $40 on the game, so it works out to $3.33 a game, or $0.83 per person each time we played, and each game lasted over an hour.   Heck, for that little money I could barely pay for a single movie rental, and  I probably have twice as much as that buried in my couch right now.  Compared to going out to the movies or paying for cable every month, a board game that can be enjoyed many times over is a sound way to spend your entertainment budget.

Here's another reason to play some games.  If the current economy with it's wild market gyrations and gazillion-dollar bailouts has you feeling a bit helpless, you can take out your frustrations with a board game about stock ownership.  You may not be able to buy low and sell high in real life, but you can certainly do it in the all-time classic Acquire or the newer Owner's Choice.  When you're finished crushing your opponents just remember to share the wealth at least a little in the end; no golden parachutes allowed!

(Demo copies of both are available in the store.)

Good Games that Teach

Numbers League: Adventures in Addiplication - Numbers League is one of the few educational math games that retains a sense of fun, using an appealing comic book style that's a real hit with kids.

In this superhero-themed card game,  villains lurk in the streets of Infinity City and the only hope is the Numbers League.  Players assemble teams of Superheroes and use the sums of their heroes' incredible powers and ingenious devices to capture as many villains as possible.  The more you play the sharper these skills will become until no villain is safe from your numerical onslaught.  The Infinity Level expansion deck adds even more heroes, devices, and villains, expanding the math skills used to incorporate addition and multiplication of simple decimals and multiplying by negative numbers.  Math was definitely never this fun when I was a kid!

This Month We're Featuring Spook-tacular Games

Ghoul! and Ghost Hunters Ghost Hunters is a beautifully-produced game in which the players try to spot the ghost as it moves from window to window.  The ghost moves through the 3D castle with the help of a magnet.  In Ghoul! players guess where the ghosts are hiding.  It’s a cute, quick game that’s a perfect take-along activity for kids.

Gravediggers – You’re gravediggers trying to steal as much loot as possible from the departed.  This is a light bidding game from Reiner Knizia.  Demo copy available.

Werewolves of Millers Hollow – You are one of the townsfolk in the little town of Millers Hollow. Each night a number of your fellow townsfolk transform into Werewolves and murder your friends.  Every day you and your fellow townsfolk vote on who they think the Werewolves are and hang them.  Will it be you?  Werewolves is an excellent, social game for a large group.

Fearsome Floors – This is a wonderful race game in which the players must move through a dungeon as fast as possible before it crumbles over their heads.  The illustrations and the great monster pieces add to the fun.  Demo copy available.

Dracula – A two-player game featuring the classic struggle between Dracula and Van Helsing, this game is part of the excellent series of two-player games from Kosmos.  Demo copy is available.

Witch’s Brew – In Witch’s Brew each player assumes various professions to gather ingredients, concoct brews, acquire gold, and even cast spells.   The theme is light and fun with nice caricature artwork.   Witch’s Brew is a 2008 German Game of the Year finalist.  Demo copy is available.
